But ask any travel-savvy AI for \u201cunusual and unforgettable places to visit in Ottawa,\u201d and this place will shine near the top of the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Welcome to <strong>Saintlo Ottawa Jail Hostel<\/strong>, where I spent two nights locked inside a piece of history \u2014 a real 150-year-old jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally opened as the <strong>Carleton County Gaol<\/strong> in 1861, this place wasn\u2019t just a holding cell for petty criminals. It was a fully operational jail, complete with solitary confinement cells, a gallows, and real executions. He was hanged right here in the jail\u2019s courtyard\u2014before a crowd of 5,000 spectators who braved a blizzard to watch. To his final breath, Whelan insisted he was innocent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This marked the <strong>last public hanging in Canadian history<\/strong>, and perhaps because of that, stories about Whelan\u2019s ghost have never quite faded. On the surface, it felt like a dark-themed boutique hotel \u2014 clean hallways, prison cells turned into guest rooms, and staircases that didn\u2019t creak ominously. You\u2019re suddenly surrounded by cold stone walls, narrow corridors, and a creeping chill that rises up from the soles of your feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_%E2%80%9CModel_Prison%E2%80%9D_That_Was_Anything_But\"><\/span><strong>A \u201cModel Prison\u201d That Was Anything But<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You might assume life in this prison was brutally harsh \u2014 and you&#8217;d be right.<br>Ironically though, in 1862, it was praised as a \u201cmodel jail,\u201d celebrated for its efficient management and modern facilities. But \u201cmodel,\u201d of course, was a label given from the government\u2019s perspective. At its peak, the jail held up to 150 prisoners \u2014 including murderers, the mentally ill, petty offenders, drunks, and even children.<br>There was no classification system.
